The Composers have landed…

The Melos Composers are descending upon San Francisco for the 2nd Annual New Music Concert (taking place on August 19th at the Community Music Center).  It has been a busy couple of days, but we are laying the groundwork to make sure everything runs smoothly for the next week.

For starters, we are getting the word out!  We have been putting up posters all over San Francisco at universities, coffee shops, record stores, and any other typically-eclectic SF Institutions.

In addition, we drove to San José State University (a fair bit south) and loaded up some thirty-odd percussion instruments into the back of a pickup truck.  Then we strapped down the vibraphone and glockenspiel with a bunch of rope and got back on the freeway for a joyride up to San Mateo.  About an hour later we unloaded the percussion equipment at Chateau de Buchanan (aka Melos Central Headquarters for the next 10 days) and then we rushed off to downtown San Francisco just in time for our outreach class at the Community Music Center.

We’d like to give a shoutout to Jono Kornfeld, Composition Instructor at the SF CMC, who had us in for a short presentation on our music—we were really glad to be able to talk to his students.  David Carpenter, Jason Thorpe Buchanan, and Dan Temkin discussed their pieces with the group, and Ryan Olivier captured everything on video.  Check out a few photos from the talk below:

Tomorrow, it is off to the grocery store to buy food for the opening picnic in Mission Dolores Park where we will meet up with all the wonderful performers who are playing on our concert!

Stay tuned —- lots more to come.
